Tips for Athletes, Coaches & Organisers
When the sun is shining, there’s nothing better than getting outside for a match, tournament, or training session. But while warm weather can boost your energy and enthusiasm, it also brings risks especially if you’re pushing yourself to perform at your best.
Whether you’re preparing for a summer sports day, a weekend tournament, or a fun community competition, keeping players safe should always be the top priority. After all, there’s no glory in risking your health and the best performances come from players who are looked after.
Here are our top tips for staying safe while playing sport in hot weather:
Hydration Is a Must
Your body loses fluids quickly through sweat, so it’s essential to keep topped up:
- Drink water before, during, and after activity even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- For longer sessions or matches, consider sports drinks with electrolytes.
- Avoid fizzy or caffeinated drinks as they can cause dehydration.
Tip: If you’re hosting an event, provide water stations and shaded rest areas for players and spectators.
Dress for the Heat
What you wear makes a difference:
- Choose lightweight, breathable clothing in light colours.
- Use moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool.
- Don’t forget a cap or visor if you’re playing in direct sunlight.
Time It Right
Avoid the hottest part of the day (usually 11am–3pm). If possible:
- Schedule matches or training sessions early morning or early evening.
- Build in regular water breaks and shaded cool-down areas.
- Shorten matches or rotate players more frequently on hot days.
Know the Warning Signs
Heat exhaustion and heatstroke can come on quickly. Keep an eye out for:
- Dizziness or headache
- Nausea or cramps
- Excessive sweating — or suddenly not sweating
- Rapid pulse or confusion
If you spot any of these, stop immediately, move to shade, and cool down with water and cold compresses.
Sunscreen Matters
Sunburn doesn’t just hurt it reduces your body’s ability to cool itself. Always:
- Apply SPF 30+ at least 20 minutes before going outside.
- Reapply regularly, especially during long matches or events.
Keep the Focus on Fun and Fair Play
Hot weather isn’t the time to push beyond safe limits. Instead:
- Encourage players to pace themselves
- Rotate players regularly
- Emphasise fun, teamwork, and sportsmanship over results
And don’t forget whether it’s a competitive league match or a casual community tournament, a well-earned trophy, medal, or award means even more when it’s won safely and fairly.
